We read every submission

Tradewinds Brief accepts submitted reporting, photography, illustration, and personal essays from contributors across the Caribbean, Africa, and the diaspora. We read every submission. We respond to every contributor.

What we are looking for

  • Reporting from the ground — on-the-ground accounts of stories underreported in the regional and international press
  • Diaspora essays — first-person reflections that illuminate the experience of carrying two countries
  • Photography — documentary work from the islands and the continent, particularly from photographers based there
  • Illustration and cartoons — for the Backpage
  • Sunday-length analysis — 1,500–3,000 words on a topic with real implications for the diaspora

What we are not looking for

  • Press releases reframed as reporting
  • Generic listicles
  • Travel content that reads as marketing
  • Pieces that name individuals not already in the public press of multiple national outlets

How to submit

Email submissions@tradewindsbrief.com.

Please include:

  1. A two-sentence pitch
  2. The full piece (or a substantial draft)
  3. A brief note about you — where you are based, your relationship to the story, anything we should know
  4. Your rate expectation, if any

We pay for accepted work. Rates depend on length, originality, and how much reporting the piece required. We discuss this upfront before assignment.

Response time

We respond within two weeks to all submissions. If you have not heard from us after that, please write back.
