Nigeria: Dangote refinery milestone, Obi one-term vow, equities record high, NEMA flood warning, Pioneer Airline launch

Nigeria crude imports plunge as Dangote and local refineries source 18M barrels domestically

Nigeria’s crude oil imports dropped sharply as the Dangote refinery and other local plants sourced 18 million barrels of crude domestically, boosting local fuel supply, Punch Newspapers reported May 14. The Dangote refinery — the largest single-train refinery on the African continent — has been the central catalyst. Nigeria’s pattern of exporting crude only to import refined fuels has begun to invert. The 18 million barrels milestone, if sustained, reduces Nigeria’s exposure to global refined-fuel price spikes — exactly the kind of spike Caribbean nations and Kenya are absorbing this month.

Peter Obi vows one-term presidency; Presidency dismisses pledge

Former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi this week committed to a one-term presidency, saying he wouldn’t stay a day longer than four years “even with a gun to my head.” The Presidency immediately dismissed the pledge, citing Obi’s past political inconsistency and saying his word cannot be trusted. Separately, Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde joined the 2027 presidential race under a PDP/APM alliance, warning against a one-party state and Nigeria’s current decline. The 2027 political conversation is intensifying earlier than usual.

Nigerian equities hit record high; MTNN and BUA Cement lead

The Nigerian equities market rally hit a record high, driven by strong buying in MTN Nigeria and BUA Cement, with market capitalisation rising to fresh peaks — signalling robust investor confidence. The rally compounds the broader narrative around the country’s economic recovery and the Dangote-driven energy story. For Nigerian diaspora portfolio investors, the equities milestone is a measurable signal of the Tinubu administration’s macroeconomic posture finding traction.

NEMA flood warning to 30+ states ahead of 2026 floods

Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency has issued a flood warning urging more than 30 states to adopt preventive measures — clearing drains, reinforcing levees, raising community awareness — to mitigate predicted 2026 floods. The 2022 floods devastated communities across the Niger Delta and parts of the Middle Belt, and NEMA’s early warning signals an attempt to convert that experience into preventive operational readiness ahead of this rainy season.

Bayelsa State-owned Pioneer Airline receives Air Operator Certificate

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has presented an Air Operator Certificate to Bayelsa State-owned Pioneer Airline to commence commercial flights. State-owned airlines have a mixed history in Nigeria; the AOC issuance gives Bayelsa a fresh attempt at the model. For the Nigerian diaspora — particularly travellers who route through Lagos and Abuja — additional domestic carrier capacity is a quiet but real improvement in the country’s internal travel infrastructure.
