First-time candidate Kiz Johnson has been sworn in as Minister of State in the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation, becoming only the second female sitting Member of Parliament in Antigua and Barbuda following her win in the April 30, 2026 polls in St Philips South, according to the Antigua Observer.
The result rounded out PM Gaston Browne’s re-election cycle, which has already drawn congratulatory statements from regional counterparts including St Kitts and Nevis PM Terrance Drew. Separately, the Observer reports that Antigua’s Ian Hughes will lead a CARICOM observer team for the upcoming St Lucia elections — a notable regional-prestige posting.
For the diaspora: Johnson’s elevation, and the gender-representation question it surfaces, are likely to dominate the New York / Toronto / London Antiguan-association circuit through summer. The CARICOM observer role also signals where Browne’s government plans to extend its regional influence next.
