Barbados Launches BiMPay Instant Payment System With First Live Central Bank Transaction
Barbados switched on BiMPay, a national instant-payment platform, on June 12, with Prime Minister Mia Mottley completing the first live transaction by QR code. Central Bank Governor Kevin Greenidge said payments that once took hours or days will now settle in seconds, at any hour, built with local banks and credit unions.
The system is pitched as a step toward a fuller digital economy and a way to reduce reliance on cash. Future features are expected to be layered on over time.
For diaspora readers with family, property, or small businesses on the island, the practical question is whether BiMPay will eventually connect to cross-border transfers — turning a domestic rail into something that touches how money actually reaches Barbados from abroad.
