Belize City drive-by killing and Nunez-Roches NFL return mark week's bookends

A 29-year-old construction worker was killed in a drive-by shooting in the Barbara Harris Street area of Belize City last week, with police responding to reports of gunfire around 8:20 p.m. Thursday, according to Breaking Belize News. The killing is one of several violent incidents reported in the city in recent days, including a separate shooting at a Belize City night spot that left a Ladyville woman dead and two others injured.

In sharply different news, Belizean NFL player Rakeem Nunez-Roches has officially returned to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — the franchise where he won a Super Bowl ring — for the 2026 season. The signing, confirmed May 8, restores a marquee diaspora-pride story to the front page after a difficult week.

For the diaspora: the urban-violence pattern in Belize City continues to push family-island and Cayo migration discussions, while Nunez-Roches’s return gives the Belizean–American sports community a renewed weekly storyline to follow through the autumn.
