Belize drafts its first national migration policy — and the diaspora's role is finally on the table
Belize has launched national consultations on its first-ever Migration and Development Policy, run with the UNDP and IOM across Belmopan, Belize City, Bella Vista and San Pedro. Priority areas include national security, labour and investment migration, and integrating migrants into social services. A consolidated draft policy is expected by late July.
For a country whose remittances run near US$152M a year and whose families are stitched across the U.S. and the region, putting migration and diaspora engagement into a single framework is overdue.
What this means for you: This is a signal item — nothing changes today, but the rules that will govern return migration, labour pathways and how Belize courts its diaspora are being written this summer. If you are Belizean abroad with views on return incentives, recognition of overseas qualifications, or investment channels, the consultation window is open now; this is the cheapest time to be heard, before the draft hardens in late July.
