Belize tells sugar farmers the era of government bailouts is finished

Prime Minister John Briceño has told Belize’s sugar sector that the days of automatic government bailouts are over, urging cane farmers and their associations to focus on innovation, productivity and competitiveness as the industry faces rising costs, climate pressures and tougher global markets. Briceño, who also holds the sugar portfolio, framed the shift as a hard but necessary reality for an industry that supports thousands of families across the sugar belt. The message sets up a contentious adjustment for one of the country’s oldest economic pillars and a key source of rural livelihoods.
