Belize, Importing Every Gallon, Takes the Full Force of the Fuel Shock
Belize faces one of the region’s sharpest fuel-price challenges because it produces none of its own fuel and absorbs import costs almost directly. With Brent crude near US$115 a barrel, pump prices have climbed steeply, with gasoline reported above US$13 per gallon earlier this year, feeding through to buses, food supply, hotels and household spending. Tourism, a pillar of the economy, runs notably costlier than in neighbouring markets, prompting green-season discounts and structured bus-fare ceilings to protect access. The squeeze underscores Belize’s exposure as a small, import-dependent economy navigating a volatile global energy market.
