Why Dog and Cat Cannot Gree
Two friends, one Sunday bone, and the trick that started a chase that never ended.
Long ago, Dog and Cat lived in the same little house and were the best of friends. They shared everything - the fire, the mat, and every meal.
One day a kind neighbour gave them a fine big bone with plenty of sweet meat on it. “We will save it for Sunday,” said Dog, “and share it equal.” Cat agreed, and they buried the bone in the yard for safekeeping.
But that night, Cat woke up hungry. She thought, Just one little taste won’t matter. She dug up the bone and had a taste. It was so nice that she had a little more. And a little more. By morning, the bone was clean.
When Sunday came, Dog went to dig up the bone and found nothing but the empty hole.
“Where is our bone?” he cried.
“What bone?” said Cat, washing her face as if butter wouldn’t melt. “Some thief must have taken it.”
But Dog had a good nose, and his nose told him the whole story. He had been tricked by his own friend.
From that day, Dog could never trust Cat again. And that is why, even now, when Dog sees Cat, he runs her up a tree - still trying to get the truth out of her about that Sunday bone.
