Dominica becomes the first Caribbean nation to put geothermal power on its national grid
Dominica’s 10-megawatt geothermal plant in the Roseau Valley has entered commissioning, making the island the first Caribbean nation to bring geothermal energy onto its national grid. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit acknowledged recent power interruptions as “the cost of doing something new,” pledging lower electricity bills and reduced dependence on imported diesel once the plant, substation and battery-storage system run as one integrated system. The IMF recorded 4.5% economic growth for Dominica in 2025. For residents and diaspora-funded households, the promise is cheaper, steadier power — with a bumpy testing period first.
