If you are in Atlanta this weekend, the Atlanta Jazz Festival opens today in Piedmont Park and runs through Monday. Free admission. The programming has historically leaned into the African and Caribbean roots of American jazz — brass band, Latin jazz, Afro-Cuban dance traditions, the diasporic musical lineage that built the form.

For Caribbean and African families in the Atlanta metro — and the metro has one of the fastest-growing Caribbean diaspora populations in the U.S. — this is the kind of weekend that anchors community without costing money. Bring food. Bring blankets. Stay for the late sets.

Atlanta’s Caribbean cultural infrastructure is being rebuilt actively. The Whine Walk Run 5K and International Food Festival is one example. The Atlanta Salsa Congress is another. The Memorial Day jazz weekend is the largest free anchor in that calendar.
