Member of Parliament for St George North East Ron Redhead will take over responsibility for Information and Communications Technology in Grenada from June 1, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell announced Friday at the launch of the International Girls in ICT Day AI Innovation Challenge. The move strips Mitchell, who currently oversees ICT and digital transformation alongside several other ministerial responsibilities, of one of his higher-profile portfolios. An official national announcement on the appointment is expected from the Prime Minister in the coming days.
Redhead previously served as Minister of State for Youth and Sports following the National Democratic Congress’s 2022 election victory but stepped away during the 2024 reshuffle to focus on completing his studies while continuing to serve as MP. Mitchell framed the appointment as allowing for more dedicated oversight of Grenada’s growing digital transformation agenda. “The fact that he is a Member of Parliament, the fact that he’s a politician, the fact that he is responsible for policymaking, is all the more reason why he recognised the need to pursue and continue his education,” Mitchell said. He added that the ICT team will benefit from “a minister who has the time and no competing priorities.”
For diaspora Grenadians watching the digital file — including those working in Caribbean fintech, GovTech consulting, and the wider tech-corridor between the region and North America — the reshuffle signals that ICT will get sustained ministerial attention rather than sit beneath the PM’s other priorities of National Security, Public Administration, and Infrastructure. The pivot also slots Redhead back into Cabinet at a moment when the NDC is preparing its political ground for the second half of its term.
