Trump nominates Kari Lake as US Ambassador to Jamaica

US President Donald Trump has nominated former Arizona television news anchor and politician Kari Lake to serve as Washington’s next ambassador to Jamaica, the White House announced Monday. The nomination now heads to the Senate for confirmation.

According to the Jamaica Gleaner, if confirmed, Lake would replace former ambassador Nick Perry, whose term ended in January 2025 — leaving the post unfilled through the first sixteen months of Trump’s second non-consecutive term.

Separately, a public dispute has flared between Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie and Westmoreland Central MP Dwayne Vaz over housing promised to families displaced by Hurricane Melissa, with Westmoreland among the parishes hardest hit by the storm.

For the diaspora: Lake is a high-profile, polarising nominee, and her confirmation hearing will set the tone for US–Jamaica relations on the issues that touch diaspora families directly — deportation policy, remittance rules, and visa processing at the Kingston embassy.
