Summary

Tradewinds Brief tries to use as few cookies as possible. We do not place advertising cookies, and we do not run programmatic ad networks that profile you across the web. We do use Google Analytics to understand, in aggregate, how the site is used. The cookies set are limited to those required for the site to function, those used for basic analytics, and, in some cases, those set by third parties you click through to.

Cookies we set ourselves

Currently: none required for first-time readers. Future state may include a session cookie for subscriber authentication once paid subscriptions launch; this page will be updated when that happens.

Cookies set by services we use

  • Google Analytics (usage measurement): sets first-party _ga and _ga_* cookies to measure how many people visit, which pages they read, and how they arrived. This is aggregate audience measurement, not advertising, and is not used to build cross-site advertising profiles.
  • Netlify (hosting): may set cookies for security, traffic distribution, and basic abuse prevention
  • Buttondown (newsletter): sets cookies on its own pages if you click through to manage a subscription; not on our pages
  • Affiliate partners (e.g., Wise via Partnerize): when you click an affiliate link, the partner may set cookies in your browser to attribute the transaction; those cookies live in your browser, not on our domain

Cookies we do NOT set

  • No advertising-network cookies (we don’t use programmatic ads)
  • No cross-site retargeting or advertising pixels (e.g., Meta/Facebook ads, ad networks)
  • No fingerprinting

Managing and opting out

Your browser allows you to control, block, or delete cookies through its settings. Doing so may affect how some services work, but it will not affect your ability to read Tradewinds Brief. To opt out of Google Analytics specifically, you can install Google’s official opt-out browser add-on at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

When this policy materially changes, we will note the change at the top of this page with the date.
