Money & Movement: Caribbean Airlines pulls back — and the regional map redraws
From June 1, CAL exits Dominica, St Kitts and the Ogle-Suriname run. LIAT and others are moving to fill the gap.
Caribbean Airlines began the third round of a network pullback on June 1, withdrawing from Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis and the Ogle-Suriname corridor, and halving frequencies to Martinique and Guadeloupe. Trinidad and Tobago’s transport and civil aviation minister told Parliament on May 22 that the carrier’s Eastern Caribbean expansion had run up losses exceeding US$18.8 million by April, attributing the problem to a 2023 expansion that lacked commercial justification.
The retreat is reshaping who connects the islands. Antigua-based LIAT 2020 is positioning to absorb routes after adding Montego Bay and a direct Antigua-to-Santo Domingo service, while interCaribbean added four routes out of Barbados in March. For diaspora travellers planning summer trips, intra-regional links are in flux — book early and confirm the operating carrier directly, especially for anything touching Dominica, St Kitts or Suriname.
