Polls open in one week — Bahamas votes May 12
Voters across The Bahamas head to the polls May 12 to choose representatives in the 41-member chamber, with 54 multimillionaires of the 130 politicians offering themselves as candidates between the governing Progressive Liberal Party and the opposition Free National Movement. Leading the FNM’s wealthy slate is former Los Angeles Lakers champion and movie actor Rick Fox, who has declared $470 million in assets, $5 million annual income, and $14.5 million in receivables according to filings.
Fox, of Canadian-Bahamian citizenship, is one of several high-net-worth candidates whose presence highlights both the diaspora-business pipeline into Bahamian politics and the increasingly expensive nature of campaigning in the country.
Energy shock: barrel prices surge past US$100
The Bahamas government says the ongoing conflict in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has disrupted a key global energy transit point — the Strait of Hormuz, which normally handles a large portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. International oil prices have surged from around US$70 per barrel earlier this year to over US$100, marking one of the sharpest energy price shocks since the Ukraine crisis.
Bahamas Power & Light fuel-pass-through tariffs are expected to reflect the increase in coming billing cycles. The government has signalled it stands ready to implement additional measures to safeguard households if necessary.
Crown land: legal pathway for long-term occupiers
The government will allow people who have occupied Crown land for over 10 years to purchase up to a quarter of an acre at a low cost. The initiative aims to increase legal home ownership, provide secure land tenure, improve infrastructure, and bring informal settlements into the formal system. For diaspora Bahamians whose family lands have informal-occupancy histories, this is the most significant tenure pathway in years.
