Tourism security strategy advances as Belize positions for sustainable growth — Tuesday Brief

The Belize Tourism Board's National Tourism Security Strategy advances with public-private partnerships, community-based conservation voices feature in the May Caribbean Compass coverage, and the government continues to position the country as a premier sustainable destination.

National Tourism Security Strategy advances

The Belize Tourism Board has launched a National Tourism Security Strategy emphasising public-private partnerships, with the government continuing to invest in tourism infrastructure and visitor security. The strategy positions Belize alongside Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, St. Maarten and other Caribbean nations engaging global travel industry leaders at trade events through 2026, even as Belize itself prioritises product development over hosting major trade fairs.

While trade events are not the primary 2026 focus, the country’s sustainable tourism positioning continues to strengthen — particularly the community-based initiatives that distinguish Belize’s Cayes and inland reserves from larger commercial Caribbean destinations.

Community voices shape conservation

Caribbean Compass’s May coverage features community voices in Belize shaping conservation, joining wider regional reporting on the seasonal rhythm shift as charter and race yachts depart for Newport, Rhode Island, after high season. The coverage highlights how local stakeholders — fishers, guides, reserve communities — are increasingly central to conservation policy in a country whose protected marine area is among the most extensive in the region.

Cruise season closes regionally

The 2025/2026 cruise season has concluded across much of the Eastern Caribbean, with Saint Lucia officially closing its season after a busy run that began October 5, 2025. Belize’s own cruise corridor saw similar seasonal patterns. The closure marks the start of the Atlantic hurricane season planning window — and the period during which infrastructure repair and community engagement on coastal protection typically advance.

Regional context

Belize is a State Party to the Escazú Agreement, the regional environmental treaty whose COP 4 wrapped in Nassau on April 24. Together with Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Dominica, Ecuador, Grenada, Guyana, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and Uruguay, the country participated in deliberations on environmental information access, public participation, and gender mainstreaming in environmental decision-making.

Diaspora notes

For diaspora Belizeans interested in returning to coastal communities, the Tourism Board’s emphasis on community-based partnerships creates structured entry points for diaspora-funded ecotourism enterprises. We are tracking which programs explicitly include diaspora capital pathways and will report when full diaspora-investor frameworks are published.

Weather and sea

Atlantic hurricane season planning across the region intensifies through May. Belize has received no specific tropical advisory in the past 24 hours.
