Dominica's CBI Revenue Still Funds the Hospital Wing as US Visa Suspensions Persist

Sunday in Roseau: the citizenship programme funds development, the visa suspension hits travellers, and the country negotiates the gap.

Good morning, Dominica. The week ends as it began: with a small island state quietly weighing the cost of revenue against the cost of access.

CBI continues despite Washington pressure

The Dominican Citizenship by Investment programme remains a primary source of development financing, even as the US visa suspensions imposed earlier this year continue to affect travellers. The previous revocation of citizenship from a small group of Iranian nationals — after the discovery of misrepresentations on applications and links to figures in Tehran — has been cited by the government as evidence of due diligence. Washington has remained unmoved on the visa suspensions. Travel bonds of US$5,000 to US$15,000 for Dominican applicants continue to be required.

Deportee accommodation under the US agreement

Dominica is among the regional governments that signed memoranda or are in advanced talks to accept US deportees, primarily for non-violent immigration matters. Civil society has continued to ask whether Dominica has the capacity for the programme as designed; the government has continued to defend the agreement as a regional solidarity measure under CARICOM coordination. The questions are not going to stop.

Tourism trade events: Dominica in regional fairs

Dominica is participating in regional fairs such as CTM 2026 in Antigua & Barbuda and SMART 2026 in St. Maarten rather than hosting its own large-scale event. The strategy is cost-effective. Whether it is sufficient is the open argument with the tourism industry stakeholders who would prefer their own platform.

ECVA volleyball: Dominica competed

Senior teams from Dominica competed in the ECVA Senior Beach Volleyball Championship in Saint Lucia from May 1 to 3. The regional federation continues to consolidate. Athlete development at the senior level is steady.

Mother’s Day

Sunday is Mother’s Day. In Roseau, in Portsmouth, in the Kalinago Territory, the day is for them. The breadfruit will be in the pot. The phone calls from the diaspora will start before sunrise.
