Sending Money Home: Compare Today's Best Rates

The fastest way to lose money sending it home is to trust the headline fee and ignore the exchange-rate markup. The real cost is fee plus the gap between the provider’s rate and the true mid-market rate. The tables below compare both, corridor by corridor, so you can see the all-in value of a transfer before you send.

New for U.S. senders: the 1% remittance tax changes the math

If you send money from the United States, the transfer method now matters more than the advertised fee. Cash-style transfers may carry the new 1% federal remittance tax, while bank-linked, card-funded, and approved digital rails may avoid it. Before sending, compare both the fee and the exchange-rate margin — and confirm whether your provider routes through a taxed or exempt rail.

Before you send:

  • avoid judging by the headline fee alone;
  • compare the exchange-rate margin;
  • check whether the transfer uses an exempt bank/card/digital rail;
  • compare the final amount your family receives.

The mid-market rate is the true exchange rate banks use among themselves. Anything below it is the provider's markup.
