Basseterre Marks 45 Years of the Treaty That Founded the OECS
Forty-five years ago today, leaders meeting in Basseterre signed the Treaty of Basseterre, creating the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States and binding seven small islands into a shared push for integration. The grouping has since grown to twelve members and underpins a common currency, a shared supreme court and joint positions on trade and climate. The anniversary lands as the OECS presses a regional blue-economy agenda.
What this means for you: the OECS framework is why Eastern Caribbean nationals share a currency and many cross-border rights — a quiet but real benefit for diaspora families.
