St Kitts and Nevis Marks 45 Years Since the Treaty of Basseterre
This week marks 45 years since seven Eastern Caribbean nations signed the Treaty of Basseterre in St Kitts on 18 June 1981, creating the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. The anniversary, themed “One Vision, One Voice,” is being used to underline the bloc’s shared currency, free movement and joint approach to climate and economic shocks.
For the diaspora spread across these islands, the OECS is the machinery behind practical conveniences — a common currency, easier travel and movement between member states, and pooled negotiating power on issues from disaster financing to citizenship programmes. The anniversary is largely symbolic, but it is a moment to note how much of daily cross-island life rests on this integration. The forward question is how deepened cooperation translates into lower costs and easier mobility.
