St Lucia offers new mothers a $1,000 grant as the birth rate declines
Saint Lucia will give mothers of registered newborns a one-time EC$1,000 grant from August 1, part of Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre’s response to what he calls a “quiet but consequential” decline in the birth rate driven by rising costs of housing, childcare and healthcare. The measure features in a record EC$2.189-billion budget that adds no new taxes and warns that geopolitical conflict could push up fuel and food prices. Pierre tied the grant to a wider concern that a shrinking birth rate threatens the labour force and the sustainability of social systems.
