Caribbean Forecasters Flag a Wetter, Dustier Season as Storm Months Open

Regional climate forecasters point to elevated flood risk, frequent Saharan dust and pockets of drought as the wet and storm season gets underway.

The Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum has signalled that shower intensity is rising into the wet season, bringing a heightened risk of flooding and flash floods, while frequent intrusions of Saharan dust are expected to affect air quality. At the same time, short-term drought had already developed by spring in parts of several islands, including Antigua, the Bahamas, St Kitts, St Lucia and St Vincent — an uneven picture of too much water in some places and too little in others.

For diaspora families, this is the practical prep window. It is worth confirming that relatives have storm and flood plans, that important documents and insurance are in order, and that homes are ready before peak months. Those supporting farmers or small operators should factor in both flood disruption and water-supply stress. The season’s early signals argue for readiness now rather than later.
