Two strong earthquakes off northern Venezuela have triggered condolences, pledges and a regional recovery fund across the Caribbean family.
Two powerful earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela in late June, killing well over a thousand people, have drawn a wave of Caribbean response. Barbados’s Mia Mottley offered support after speaking with Venezuela’s acting leadership, the development bank CAF launched a US$1 million recovery fund, and Belize confirmed several of its students studying there were caught up in the disaster. The episode underscores how tightly the southern Caribbean and its mainland neighbour are bound when crisis hits.
