Venezuela's Twin Earthquakes Kill More Than 3,300 as Caribbean Neighbors Send Aid
The death toll from two powerful quakes has passed 3,300, and Caribbean governments are pledging cash and relief as recovery begins.
The death toll from Venezuela’s twin earthquakes has climbed past 3,300, with more than 16,700 injured, according to official figures, as rescue and recovery work continues. The disaster has rippled across the region, prompting solidarity from Caribbean neighbours.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has pledged US$100,000, Saint Kitts and Nevis has moved to assist, and Trinidad and Tobago’s health ministry has backed relief efforts. Development lenders have also announced a recovery and reconstruction fund. For the diaspora with ties to the wider region, the response is a reminder of how closely Caribbean and South American fortunes are linked.
