St Vincent's 1,766 Grade 6 students sit Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment on Wednesday and Thursday at 18 centres statewide

A total of 1,766 Primary School Grade 6 students across St Vincent and the Grenadines sit the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment on Wednesday and Thursday this week, joining thousands of others across the Caribbean in the annual exercise that accounts for 60 per cent of the final marks determining entry into secondary school. The assessment will be held at 18 centres statewide, with the testing window running May 13 and 14.

The CPEA is administered by the Caribbean Examinations Council and is one of the most consequential dates in any Caribbean education year. For the Grade 6 cohort and their families, the test result combines with continuous school-based assessment to determine secondary school placement. The Caribbean Examinations Council issued a reassuring message to students, teachers, and parents on May 11 — standard pre-exam communications, but a useful signal for any diaspora family checking that the cohort is well prepared.

For diaspora Vincentian families with school-age children in the home country, the CPEA window matters in real-time. Many remittance-supported households organise additional tutoring, school supplies, and travel for the exam period. The 1,766 student count is a useful benchmark — it shows roughly how many SVG students are entering secondary school each year and how many education places, scholarships, and skills programmes the system must plan around. Searchlight’s editorial on the eve of the exam stressed that the event carries both opportunity and stress, with anxiety levels among pre-teens a known factor on test day.
